A school of fish

We started off our morning a little earlier than usual. Today we walked a few blocks down to the ocean to pick out our dinner. Fresh from the morning catch we got a fish that looked like a halibut. Both eyes were on the same side. Then off to school. Blah blah blah.
After school we went to lunch at a little cafe and our waiter was named Oscar. Oscar knew a bit of English because he has lived in Spain for 10 years. At the end of our meal when he found out that we were here for Spanish lessons he said he would only talk to us in Spanish when we come back. When we left we talked about how that was one of the places that we would like to become a "regular", but the prices were a little higher than we were paying in other cafe's. I got a fresh squeezed orange juice for $4.25, but it was very large. The other items were just a bit more expensive.
After lunch we negotiated our way through a purchase of Cuban cigars. They are in a cabinet in the liquor department. You have to find someone to open it, then they take the cigars to another counter up front. We knew the process was a bit different because Leo told us about it beforehand. There was a kid working in the store that spoke English so he was able to help us. You pay with your groceries and the pick up the cigars at another counter. The kid who helped us ended up telling the cashier how to help us. It is fun to experience different customs in other places.
Allen, being a good student, worked on homework at home, while I took a long nap. I figure he can figure the lesson out then fill me in on the highlights. I think Allen is ready for some "alone time". That would be without Tracie...
Tonight we had guests with us for dinner. Ken was a pilot in the U.S. Air force and his wife Emaliee is a German who was raised in Mexico who moved to Uruguay with him. Emaliee and her sister own a cafe by our school, you guessed it...it is a small world. The cafe we ate lunch at was owned by them. Emaliee was there and saw us and wondered if we were Mecki's guests but it was shift change so she was too busy to come see. They were both so nice and so interesting to talk to. Emaliee helped us with the different accents of Spanish around the world. We had a great time talking and eating the fish with a saffron sauce. Saffron is pretty good stuff.
*Mom, please buy some creamy peanut butter to bring over with you. Just start a list. The p.b. is for Emaliee.
They are all working on planning the stay for mom, dad and Emily at Christmas time. We are a little late making housing reservations and it will be the high season, but it will all work out. See, I already have the Uruguayan attitude!
Allen is snoring now, but he has a big day tomorrow. Right after school we have to run home because Fransisco is coming over to teach him to make flan. We are all very excited. It feels like the anticipation when Santa CLaus is coming to visit.
Did I mention we are joining in a croquette tournament on Saturday??? More on that later.
