Saturday Nov 5 2011

We are staying in a beautiful house in an area called Punta Carretas. Our first hosts are Leo and Mecki,  they are Germans who moved to new York City and then chose to move to Uruguay.  Mecki went to the same school (in 2006) that we are going to and she bacame good friends with Martha.  Martha is the owner of the school.  Mickey has not taken in students before.  We seem to be the exception for wanting the home stay experience.  I admit at first I was very concerned that we would be staying with Germans who speak English and Spanish. We  were  wanting the whole Spanish Immersion. I know now that we are very lucky that it worked out this way.
Mecki picked us up yesterday at the airport and it was raining.  But, it was warm so no complaints.  We had dinner with Leo and Mecki and their good friend Francisco who is a Uruguayan.  We had a very nice spaghetti dinner with wine and coffee and very interesting conversations about Germany, New York and Uruguay.
Our house is amazing! It is a colonial art deco home built in the 1930's.  Very tall doors and gorgeous skylights in every room.  It is in one of the nicest neighborhoods. We have two dogs. Max is a schnauzer and Almandi is a street dog whom they adopted.   Our room is upstairs. we climb up a set of about 13 stairs to our room.  They are steep skinny little stairs. Ah...the ambiance. I will add a picture tomorrow.
Today we went on a walk to get oriented. We went two blocks down to the beach. Then we walked down the rambla. Along the rambla is a pedestrian walkway that parallels the coast.  We were walking with all sorts of people. From families with kites to kids playing soccer. Bikes, rollerblades and couples walking. It was really nice. We walked inland and realized we had the wrong map so we walked around a bit. We went through a street market and then found a shopping center.
Tonight we went to a restaurant right around the corner from our house. We went with Mecki and Leo.  I had a huge steak for about $13.00 and Allen had sweet blood sausage. I tried it and it was really good...We ate, four people with steaks and lots of wine and beer for Less than $20.00 each.
We priced an iPhone at the mall and it would cost$1400.00 to buy here.  We are not taking our iPad out in public. It would be an thieves dream.
There are so many things to talk about but that's all I have for tonight.
